In 1950, it was decided that since the majority of Miss America's year of service fell in the next calendar year, the woman who won in 1950 would become Miss America 1951. This process remains in effect today.
Yolande Betbeze of Mobile, Alabama was crowned Miss America 1951 in the pageant held in 1950.
